The EU did not reach an agreement on limiting gas prices
The energy ministers of the European Union states did not reach a consensus on gas price limits.
An informal meeting of EU energy ministers took place on October 12 in Prague. Government officials had to decide on a solution to the problem of high fuel prices. This year, gas prices have increased by almost 90% as a result of energy blackmail from russia.
Most EU countries want to set a fuel price cap, but are struggling to agree on what form it should take: whether to cap the price of all gas, piped gas, or just gas used to generate electricity, reports edition of DW.
Germany and the Netherlands support the introduction of an alternative basic gas price, joint gas procurement and tighter gas savings this winter. France, Belgium and Italy emphasize only the limitation of the ceiling price of gas. At the same time, Spain and Portugal already in June resorted to such a step regarding the fuel used for the production of electricity. On the other hand, other states still fear the growth of gas demand throughout the EU, Reuters noted.
It is currently unclear whether there is sufficient support from countries to introduce gas price caps. Instead, as early as next week, Brussels will publish proposals for the joint purchase of gas and the development of an alternative price for gas, said the EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson.
