The EU wants to lay an underwater internet cable across the Black Sea
The European Union intends to lay an underwater Internet cable across the Black Sea to improve communication with Georgia and reduce dependence on the Russian Federation.
Laying the cable will cost 45 million euros. reports the Financial Times with reference to sources.
The 1,100 km long cable should connect Europe with the Caucasus. As explained by the European Commission, this will help reduce “dependence on the terrestrial fiber optic connection passing through Russia.”
In 2021, the EU and Georgia agreed on the need for this cable. The war in Ukraine gave an additional impetus to work in this direction.
Currently, the project is at the stage of review and feasibility assessment.
The British telecommunications corporation Vodafone also plans to lay a submarine cable in the Black Sea.
