The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the IMO discussed the growing activity of Russian tankers subject to sanctions

The IMO informed about the measures taken to combat the so-called “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation as part of countering the so-called substandard shipping.
The First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Serhiy Kyslytsa met with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Arsenio Dominguez in London, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported.
The parties discussed the state and prospects of cooperation between Ukraine and the IMO.
“The Deputy Minister separately noted the importance of the IMO technical assistance program for Ukraine, which provides for the presence of the Organization’s experts directly in Ukraine and the implementation of three key components – an assessment of the needs of maritime infrastructure, the preparation of a national oil pollution response plan and the implementation of the Single Maritime Window system,” the report says.
The Ukrainian side expressed concern about the activity of the so-called “shadow fleet” – a network of vessels that systematically violate international standards, operate without proper technical supervision and pose a threat to the safety of navigation and the marine environment. In this context, the Secretary-General informed about the measures that the IMO is taking to combat this phenomenon as part of countering the so-called substandard shipping.
In particular, Serhiy Kyslytsia expressed gratitude to the Secretary-General for the practical assistance that the IMO provides to our state in the context of Russian aggression.
