Tragedy in the Caspian Sea: 14 Kazakhstani Navy sailors die during exercises

The servicemen were swept out to sea during a combat training mission on the coast due to a sharp deterioration in the weather.

The tragedy occurred on September 24 in the Mangistau region. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan, writes Tengri News.

The servicemen were performing a combat training mission on the coast of the Caspian Sea, when meteorological conditions deteriorated sharply and the wind intensified. As a result, 17 servicemen were swept out to sea.

The search operation was completed on September 25. According to the country’s Ministry of Defense, the number of people killed during the naval exercises in the Caspian Sea reached fourteen people. Most of the dead were conscripts. Three were rescued, one of them was hospitalized.

The search and rescue operation involved units of the Navy, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, aviation and other services. A commission from the Ministry of Defense headed by the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General of Aviation Dauren Kosanov, has left for the scene to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

A day of mourning has been declared in Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Defense announced that the families of the deceased will be provided with the necessary assistance and support. A criminal case has been opened into the tragedy.
