UDS has already built the second SLG barge

The Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company launched another SLG barge.

“This is a type of barge capable of transporting cargo of more than 2,000 tons. The first such barge was launched at the end of last year,” said Minister of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development Oleksandr Kubrakov.

Both barges are built from old forty-meter lantern barges, which have not been used for a long time due to economic impracticability. A full-fledged SLG river barge is built according to the designer’s principle: two lighters are docked with the help of an insert cut from a third vessel.

The minister emphasized that the use of lighters to create new SLG vessels makes it possible to systematically update the river fleet even during the war. At the same time, the production cost of SLG barges is much lower than building a vessel from scratch.

“It is important that all work on the construction of new barges takes place in Ukraine. This creates new jobs and has a positive impact on both the economy of the region and the overall development of the inland waterways industry. This is also important for ensuring logistics and export of grain,” Kubrakov noted.

As previously reported by USM, the project envisages the construction of about 30 new barges, which in the long run will allow to obtain 5-6 more barge caravans.
