Ukraine and Romania agreed to jointly develop the Danube ports

A three-party meeting was held between Ukraine, the European Commission and Romania. The purpose of the negotiations is to coordinate efforts to improve export capacities through the Ukrainian and Romanian channels of the Danube River.

During the meeting, representatives of Ukraine and Romania discussed the possibility of jointly measuring the depths of parts of the Danube River. The parties also discussed the issue of improving navigation. In particular, the improvement of pilotage of ships on the common sector of the river should increase the number of ship calls to the ports of both countries, the website of the Government portal reports.

We will remind you that recently Ukraine carried out dredging in the area from the zero kilometer of the Bystre mouth to the 116th kilometer of the Kili mouth of the Danube. The maximum draft was increased from 3.9 meters to 6.5-7 meters. In turn, Romania demanded an immediate stop of all dredging operations, unless they relate to the improvement of navigation.

All parties agreed that the development of efficient and safe navigation on the Danube River is possible in productive and coordinated cooperation with colleagues from the European Commission, Romania and the Danube Commission.

During the year of the full-scale war, the ports of “Izmail”, “Reni” and “Ust-Dunaisk” tripled their cargo flow. Through the Danube port cluster, Ukraine exported more than 17 million tons of cargo. Also, only these ports are currently used to import goods necessary for Ukraine.
