Ukrainian sailors will be required to undergo additional safety training

The changes introduced by the IMO resolution include mandatory competencies on combating violence, harassment and bullying on board.
From January 1, 2026, amendments to the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Code (STCW Code) will come into force in Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the Shipping Administration.
The new rules were adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in resolution MSC.560(108). The process of implementing these requirements is coordinated by the Shipping Administration.
The changes primarily concern the initial safety training block (part A of section VI of the Code). In particular, the updated table of competencies A-VI/1-4 has been supplemented with items on combating violence, sexual harassment, bullying and other forms of discrimination on board ships.
Seafarers performing safety or pollution prevention duties must complete agreed training or instruction in four areas before embarking on a ship:
• personal survival (Table A-VI/1-1),
• fire safety (A-VI/1-2),
• basic medical care (A-VI/1-3),
• personal safety and community responsibilities (A-VI/1-4).
The changes require not only completion of courses, but also documented proof of competence, either through examinations or systematic assessment, in accordance with the criteria in the tables of the Code.
All current safety training certificates remain valid until their expiry date, but only if the training institutions have implemented updated curricula that take into account the new anti-violence competencies.
These requirements apply to educational institutions that have basic and abbreviated training programs approved by the Administration. In case of failure to comply with the new standards, the documents will not comply with the updated international requirements.
Earlier, USM wrote that the Shipping Administration is preparing to work in blackouts.
