Ukrainian standards for training seafarers recognized by IMO committee

Ukraine’s results in the field of seafarer certification have been highly appreciated at the international level.

This was reported by the Head of the Shipping Administration Євгеній Ігнатенко. Yevgeny Ignatenko.

According to him, the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) considered the Report of Ukraine on quality standards applicable to seafarer training, competency assessment, certification, medical certificates, as well as confirmation and extension of the validity of their documents, and decided to approve it without comments.

“This means that Ukraine has been recognized as a state that fully complies with the provisions of the STCW Convention,” Ignatenko emphasized.

He noted that every five years, the IMO assesses the results of Ukraine’s implementation of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended. The Shipping Administration ensured the timely submission of the Report for 2019-2024.

“The information provided, in particular, took into account the results of the reform in the field of seafarers’ certification, as a result of which more than 90,000 Ukrainian seafarers were certified. The report was reviewed by a special expert group and the IMO Secretariat, as a result of which the Maritime Safety Committee decided to approve it without comments,” the message says.

In particular, the approval of the Report on the Implementation of the STCW Convention without comments means that Ukraine has retained its position in the IMO White List.

“For Ukrainian seafarers, this is an opportunity to work on ships under the flags of the STCW Convention member states, as well as to easily interact with foreign shipowners and maritime administrations, including regarding the recognition of issued diplomas/certificates of a specialist and confirmations to them,” Yevheniy Ignatenko concluded.

We will remind, on Tuesday, February 11, it became known that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dismissed Yevgeniy Ignatenko from the post of Head of the Shipping Administration.
