USDA lowers forecast for corn and sunflower harvest in Ukraine

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its December report lowered its forecast for the corn and sunflower harvest in Ukraine.

This led to a decrease in the forecast for world production and world corn stocks in the updated balance for 2025/26 MY, the USDA report says.

Thus, the forecast for the corn harvest in Ukraine in 2025/26 MY was reduced by 3 million tons to 29 million tons, which will still exceed last year’s figure by 8%.

Compared to November, experts reduced the yield estimate by 5% to 6.9 tons/hectare, and the area to be harvested by 5% to 4.2 million hectares, which will exceed last year’s figures by 6% and 2%, respectively, due to delayed harvest and adverse conditions.

The USDA lowered its forecast for world corn production by 3.27 million tons (which will still be a record level) to 1.28 billion tons.

The USDA also lowered its forecast for the sunflower harvest in Ukraine by 1.5 million tons to 10.5 million tons.

As for sunflower oil, experts expect production in Ukraine to be 4.5 million tons, which is 0.7 million tons less than last year. The forecast for sunflower meal production is estimated at 4.3 million tons (also 0.7 million tons less than last year).

The forecast for world oilseed production has increased by 2.25 million tons to 690.26 million tons. In particular, the reason was the increase in the rapeseed harvest in Canada and Australia.

Earlier, USM reported that China, Turkey and Libya are the main buyers of Ukrainian barley in the new season.
