The authorities of Moldova are urgently repairing the railway to the port of Giurgiulesti
The Emergency Situations Commission of Moldova allocated $3.4 million from the state budget to repair the damaged section of the railway between the southern city of Cagul and Giurgiulesti.
“The repair of the railway section will lead to the development of alternative and safe routes to the ports of Giurgiulesti, Galați and Reni,” the Moldovan government said in a press release.
As Interfax-Ukraine writes, the funds were allocated to the state-owned enterprise “Railways of Moldova”.
The section Cagul – Giurgiulesti leads directly to the only international port of Giurgiulesti in Moldova. The port is located on the banks of the Prut and the Danube, 133 km from the Black Sea. The village of Giurgiulesti, in which the port is located, borders on the Odesa region of Ukraine on one side, and Romania on the other.
Train traffic on this section was closed in August 2022 after a landslide in the village of Valeny. Cargo was transported through this section in transit through Ukraine.
Earlier, in an interview with RFI, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that Moldova is ready to help Ukraine with grain transit. She noted that Moldova is conducting negotiations with Ukraine, Romania and the EU in this regard.
“And obviously one of the solutions is rapid investment in transport infrastructure, naval infrastructure to increase capacity. Because we want to increase our exports, we want to develop our infrastructure, and we can do it, in particular with the help of European Union resources,” Sandu said.
