EU prepares sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet and LNG projects
The permanent representatives of the European Union countries will soon consider the 15th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation.
The permanent representatives of the EU countries will discuss the next, 15th package of sanctions against Russia on November 27. This is reported by the Reuters agency, citing European diplomats.
Among the proposed measures are sanctions against the Russian “shadow fleet” and Chinese companies that supply Moscow with weapons.
The new package, prepared by the European Commission, provides for increased fight against the Russian “shadow fleet”, which is used to circumvent restrictions on oil exports by sea. 48 tankers may be included in the blacklist.
The sanctions also include new measures against Russian liquefied natural gas, and also provide for the expansion of the No Russia clause. This clause obliges EU subsidiaries in third countries to prohibit the re-export of certain goods to Russia.
In addition, pressure is planned on financial institutions that help Russia circumvent Western sanctions. This step is in line with previous actions taken by the United States.
In total, the sanctions list includes 29 legal entities and 54 individuals. For the first time, companies from China, which, according to the EU, support Russian military production, may be included in the list.
Approval of the sanctions requires unanimous consent of all 27 EU member states. The date of final approval of the package is currently unknown.
Earlier, USM reported that Britain imposed sanctions against 30 Russian shadow tankers. Over the past year, the vessels transported billions of pounds worth of oil and petroleum products.
