Shipowner Stavenger paid over 64 million for oil spill at Pivdennyi port

Marino Shipping paid the state for damages caused by sea pollution in the amount of UAH 64.8 million.

This was reported by the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-West District.

According to the official version, at the end of April 2020, the Stavanger vessel discharged 8.4 tons of pollutants – palm oil – in the waters of the Pivdenny seaport. Earlier, USM reported that the spill occurred as a result of an accident.

Later, information appeared that laboratory tests confirmed that the norm of fats and oils in seawater was exceeded by up to 77 mg/dm³.

“For this fact, state inspectors drew up a report on an administrative offense, as a result of which the ship’s captain was found guilty under Part 1 of Article 59-1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. The amount of damages caused to the state amounted to USD 2.4 million (over UAH 64 million),” the report says.

After that, Marino Shipping refused to compensate for the losses. In turn, the Kominternivka Local Prosecutor’s Office of the Odessa region filed a lawsuit in the interests of the state represented by the environmental inspection.

In July 2022, the Commercial Court of the Odessa region partially satisfied the claim, obliging the company to pay 64.8 million hryvnias, taking into account the US dollar exchange rate on the day of filing the claim.

The State Environmental Inspectorate added that on January 17, 2024, the losses were finally paid in full.
