US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports. He also canceled the duty-free regime for steel from Ukraine.
The 25% tariff applies to all steel and aluminum imports to the United States without exceptions, The Washington Post reports.
The US president also canceled Ukraine’s temporary exemption from tariffs on steel and steel products. This is stated in the decree dated February 10. The duty-free regime for Ukrainian steel was supposed to be in effect until mid-2025, but Trump terminated it early.
Donald Trump’s actions are aimed at promoting increased domestic production of metals and increasing employment. The administration is particularly focused on limiting China’s opportunities in the US market, although the States receive most of these metals from other countries.
At the same time, it is expected that the introduction of additional tariffs by the States will increase costs for domestic manufacturers who use industrial metals to manufacture, for example, cars and equipment. This contradicts Trump’s campaign promises to lower the cost of living for Americans.
