Greenpeace and Nordic Ukraine Forum call on Sweden to stop Russia’s shadow fleet

Activists are calling on Stockholm to take more decisive action, as the Russian “shadow fleet” not only finances the war, but also threatens the ecology of the Baltic Sea.

Nordic Ukraine Forum, together with Greenpeace, submitted an appeal to the Swedish government demanding that it strengthen measures against the Russian “shadow fleet”. This is stated in the Nordic Ukraine Forum’s statement on Facebook.

The petition was signed by 19,529 people. The initiative is aimed at restricting the activities of vessels that evade sanctions and pose an ecological threat to the Baltic Sea.

“The appeal calls on Sweden to take decisive action to stop the “shadow fleet”, which, in addition to financing Russia’s war, is also an ecological time bomb for the Baltic Sea,” writes Nordic Ukraine Forum.

As the petition initiators noted, the Swedish government is already taking steps to counter Russian sanctions schemes. In particular, the country is working within the EU to strengthen sanctions against vessels and companies that facilitate the activities of the “shadow fleet”.

Activists also provided the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a number of recommendations on further measures against illegal schemes for transporting Russian energy resources.

As USM reported, the Albanian government agreed the day before to help Ukraine fight the “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation.
