The chief mate of a foreign vessel was informed of suspicion due to pollution in the port of Pivdennyi

Due to palm oil pollution of the water area in the port of Pivdennyi, losses amounted to more than $2 million.

This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine.

Thus, the senior assistant captain of a foreign vessel was notified in absentia of suspicion of sea pollution within the internal maritime waters of Ukraine.

This is an incident in early May 2024. During the unloading of the vessel in the port of Pivdenny, an uncontrolled discharge of palm oil occurred.

Another palm oil leak overboard occurred during the pumping of liquid residues from the bow cargo tanks into the settling tanks.

“The suspects’ failure to comply with established monitoring procedures, in particular, checking the cargo system and equipment control, led to the leakage of 7.2 tons of oil, which caused significant damage to the marine environment,” the report says.

In particular, the department emphasizes that this is a violation of the requirements of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships of 1973.

Prosecutors also filed a lawsuit in the interests of the state against the shipowner to recover damages.

We remind you that this year, the shipowner Stavenger paid more than 64 million for the oil spill in the port of Pivdennyi, which occurred in 2020.
