Fight against spoofing: Lithuania proposes additional sanctions against Russia and Belarus

EU transport ministers have signed a letter proposing additional sanctions against Russia and Belarus for interfering with shipping and aviation.
The letter to the European Commission urgently requests the acceleration of the deployment of interference-resistant services, especially anti-spoofing functions in the Galileo program, the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications reported.
In particular, the document proposes to modernize traditional navigation infrastructure in order to increase the overall resilience of critical infrastructure and strengthen security across Europe.
The ministers justified their proposals by the fact that since 2022, two types of interference for global navigation satellite systems have been observed in the airspace of the Baltic Sea region – jamming and signal substitution, which poses a threat to various types of transport, especially civil aviation and maritime shipping.
The document was signed by the ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, Slovakia, Finland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark and Romania.
As a reminder, in June this year, NATO defense ministers signed a joint declaration on the security of the Baltic Sea in Brussels. The document provides for closer cooperation between NATO and the EU, information exchange and measures to deter threats in the region.
