“The Russian economy is starting to suffer,” Macron commented on new sanctions against Russian oil companies

The French President called the new US sanctions against Rosneft a turning point in the joint fight against the Kremlin’s war machine.
The French head of state said this at a press conference after the European Council meeting in Brussels, Ukrinform reports.
“The sanctions package that we have been working on for several weeks coincides in time with US sanctions, which are hitting the main exporters of Russian oil in an unprecedented way, and therefore the sources of financing for Russia’s military efforts,” Macron stressed.
He stressed that Washington’s decision to impose massive sanctions against Russian oil giants is an important step that was previously absent from the United States’ strategy.
“I think what happened is a turning point. The United States decided to impose massive sanctions. Until now, they have refused to do this. So, these are huge expenses to finance Russia’s military efforts – at a time when, as we know, the Russian economy is starting to suffer,” the French President said.
According to him, in combination with the new package of EU sanctions and pressure on third players, these measures can significantly affect Russia’s position.
The White House said the day before that new sanctions against Russian oil companies should create serious economic pressure on Moscow and force other countries to reduce or stop purchasing its energy resources.
Meanwhile, analysts note that these restrictions could have a positive impact on the global tanker market.
