Oil slick after Russian strikes stretches 55 km along Odesa coast

The oil slick that appeared after Russian strikes on the port infrastructure of the Odesa region has already stretched 55 km along the coast and reached Sanzheyka.

As a result of the Russian attack on the port infrastructure of the Odesa region, the oil slick in the Black Sea has stretched 55 km. This was reported by the director of the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology Oleg Hryb, writes Ukrinform.

He called the pollution a “long-term problem,” despite the vegetable origin of the oil. The area of the slick is now about 130 square kilometers.

“This leads to such phenomena as suffocation, when gas exchange stops… We have already seen this in the example of birds. They are covered with this oil slick, they cannot fly. The bird simply freezes,” commented Serhiy Stepanenko, chief researcher at the State Institution “Institute of Market and Economic and Ecological Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”.

According to him, chemical reagents should not be used now. According to the scientist, this should have been done in the first hours of the spill and the Adzhaliysky estuary should have been blocked. Now, chemical reagents can cause more harm than the oil itself.

Scientists add that in winter, the decomposition of the oil will take longer, but the consumption of oxygen by the sea will also be slower. The upcoming storms should break the film.

Previously, USM reported on the leakage of sunflower oil after Russian strikes on port infrastructure and the death of birds in the area of the Dolphin and Langeron beaches in Odesa.
