Russian ship involved in weapons transport spotted near Tunisia

The ship’s destination is unknown, but it is likely to be heading to St. Petersburg.
A drone spotted the so-called Syrian Express Asalon (IMO 9198226) north of the coast of Tunisia. This was reported by the Russian Forces Spotter OSINT project.
The ship was passing through the Mediterranean Sea on February 27. Its destination is unknown, but OSINT records indicate St. Petersburg.
The Asalon’s connection to the weapons supply route has earned it the nickname “arms courier.” The ship was repeatedly used by the Russians to provide military support to the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, before it was overthrown by rebels.
USM also previously wrote that the Russians are using a “shadow fleet” to smuggle weapons from the occupied Crimea.
