Albania and Greece could not agree in maritime borders

Albania and Greece have not reached an agreement on the maritime borders between the countries.

The states could not agree, despite the meeting of the prime ministers of both countries within the framework of the European Political Community in Prague, reports Euractiv.

In 2009, Albania and Greece agreed on the delimitation of the continental shelf in the waters between the countries. But Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who was in the opposition at the time, referred the issue to the Constitutional Court.

According to him, Greece received about 225 square meters of Albania’s waters under the agreement. The court agreed with this, and relations between the countries deteriorated.

Rama came to power in 2013, but since then the territorial issue has not been resolved. Last October, it was announced that the case would be referred to an international tribunal.“We will follow the procedures from start to finish because we have to make our position very clear, we have to make our intentions very clear in this process. We do not have a consensus between the parties,” the Albanian Prime Minister said.
