Freight from Odesa to Chinese ports remains stable despite weak demand

Despite limited demand for tonnage, shipowners in the Black Sea continue to keep freight rates at a stable level.

As of mid-June, no significant changes have been recorded in the sea freight market in the Black Sea region. This was reported by ASAP Agri analyst and freight broker Atria Brokers Pavlo Lysenko.

Shipowners generally keep rates at the current level, trying to avoid further declines even in conditions of limited demand for tonnage. Only on some short routes, in particular towards Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean countries, charterers manage to negotiate slightly lower rates, especially in the segments of “handy sizes” and “coasters”.

Meanwhile, the freight rate of “panamax” for a consignment of corn from deep-water ports of Ukraine to South China remains at $ 34 per ton. Transportation of 30 thousand tons of corn to the east coast of Italy remains in the range of 16–17 dollars per ton.

In the “burner” segment, the cost of transporting batches of 6 thousand tons of corn from the Danube ports of Ukraine to Italy also remains unchanged — 29–30 dollars per ton.

On domestic routes by barge from Izmail or Reni to Constanta, rates for transportation of batches of 1–3 thousand tons remain at the level of 8–9 euros per ton.

Experts note that the market is currently in a waiting phase: shipowners are trying to minimize concessions, while charterers are looking for opportunities to secure deals on more favorable terms, especially on short routes.

As USM wrote the day before, Atria Brokers outlined priority markets for the export of Ukrainian corn in the new season.
