Icebreaker James Clark Ross and research vessel Belgica were given new names in Odesa

In Odesa, the icebreaker James Clark Ross, bought in the UK, and the research vessel Belgica, donated to Ukraine by Belgium, were renamed.

The renaming ceremony took place in Odesa on Friday, October 29th, with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

James Clark Ross is now called Noosphere. Probably in honor of the teachings of Academician Vernadsky about the “noosphere”. The scientific station of Ukraine in Antarctica, where the icebreaker will deliver polar expeditions, is also named after this scientist.

The vessel Belgica was named Boris Aleksandrov, in honor of the Director of the Institute of Marine Biology of Ukraine, who died in a fire in a house on Troitskaya street, 25 in Odesa two years ago.

Recall that during his visit to Odesa, Zelenskyy announced a program to create a research fleet of Ukraine from 36 vessels.
