Latvia calls on EU to completely ban maritime services for Russian vessels

The statement was made public on February 1 after the new price ceiling for Russian oil of $44.10/barrel came into effect.

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže called on the EU to impose a complete ban on maritime services for Russian shipments in order to reduce the Russian budget revenues. She wrote about this in X.

Braže stressed that the next step should be a ban on European companies from insurance, freight, transportation and other services related to the transportation of Russian oil. The initiative is being considered as part of the 20th package of EU sanctions, which is planned to be adopted on February 24.

The European Commission is expected to publish a proposal on the content of the sanctions package next week.

Bloomberg reported the day before that the EU is considering abandoning the price ceiling for Russian oil in favor of a total ban on insurance, freight and other maritime services for its transportation, regardless of price.
