On September 17, the Latvian Seimas began consideration of a bill that will allow for an accelerated review of the fee for using the railway infrastructure during the transit of grain from Russia by the end of the year.

Latvia and Lithuania are tightening controls over the transit of Russian grain through their ports amid suspicions that some of the cargo may originate from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

The inspections of the cargoes will be carried out at the expense of their owners, that is, Russian grain exporters. One inspection can cost up to 900 thousand euros.

Latvia and Lithuania are considering restrictions on the transshipment of Russian grain through their ports amid growing transit from Russia.

The statement was made public on February 1 after the new price ceiling for Russian oil of $44.10/barrel came into effect.

Latvian vessels continue to supply fuel to Russian tankers belonging to the “shadow fleet”. There are no legal mechanisms to stop such operations yet.

The partnership between the Ukrainian and Latvian ports is aimed at developing sustainable logistics, exchanging experience and strengthening Ukraine’s ties with EU markets.
