Pivdennyi, Olvia, Reni. New records of the ports of the Odesa region

In August, the ports of Pivdennyi, Olvia and Reni set cargo handling records. Olvia is preparing for a concession, Reni is increasing capacity, but not solving financial problems, and Pivdennyi continues to lead in all areas.

Pivdennyi

In August this year, operators in the port of Pivdenny set a new record for the transshipment of grain cargo per month – 1.3 million tons. This index is 157 thousand tons higher than the previous record of the port for handling grain cargo for the month – 1.15 million tons in November 2014.

The port of Pivdennyi is the deepest in Ukraine, which allows it to accept vessels of the Capesize type and handle more than 100 thousand tons of cargo per call.

The port operator, SE CSP “Yuzhny”, develops its own facilities with might and main. The company regularly places tenders for the purchase of equipment and repair work.

The financial plan of the SE CSP “Yuzhny” for 2021 assumes the development of UAH 819.2 million (USD 30.6 million) of capital investments. Of these, UAH 131.2 million (USD 4.9 million) were allocated for major construction, and UAH 210.6 million (USD 7.8 million) for reconstruction and modernization.

In Pivdennyi, the Port Development Plan, approved in 2019, is being implemented. The main paragraphs in the “to do list” of the port are an increase in the depths in the water area up to 21 m (now the depth of the main berths is up to 18 m), as well as the reconstruction and construction of new terminals and berths. The port is planned to be modernized by 2029.

Olvia

The cargo turnover of the SSP Olvia for 8 months amounted to 2.65 million tons (-0.4% compared to the same period last year).

Despite the fact that the results of this year are less than last year by 0.4%, the port of Olvia exceeded the planned rates by 9.5%. In August, Olvia transhipped 735.2 thousand tons, which is 81% more than in August 2020. This is a record index for the port, and it is 50% higher than the previous record for a cargo handling enterprise in January 2020.

The indicators of cargo turnover in the port of Olvia were distributed as follows:

  • export – 2.45 million tons (+6%);
  • cabotage – 112.7 thousand tons (+31.6%);
  • import – 89.9 thousand tons (-70%);
  • transit – 0.52 thousand tons (-81%).

Among the port operators of the SSP Olvia, the largest amount of cargo was handled by EVT Grain LLC – 1.45 million tons. The second place is taken by the State Enterprise “Stevedoring Company “Olvia” with an indicator of 1.2 million tons of cargo.

In the summer, the state stevedore Olvia loaded the largest consignment in its history: 47.2 thousand tons of clay were loaded onto the Wadi Sudr vessel.

Let us remind you that the port is currently undergoing a transitional concession period. The port’s concessionaires are the Qatari company QTerminals.

Reni

The port of Reni also set a record for cargo handling in August – 185.5 thousand tons, which is the best monthly index for the port in recent years. In total, since the beginning of the year, the port has handled 586 thousand tons of cargo.

75% of cargo handled in the port in August is grain. In just a month, 58 vessels entered the enterprise.

The port of Reni is gradually increasing the turnover of grain cargo on its territory. Thus, the Agro-Reni company is building a new warehouse in the port for storage of grain and food crops. The total storage capacity will be 7 thousand tons, which will increase the simultaneous storage in the port to 30 thousand tons.

In addition, in the summer, Ukraine has granted Moldova 20 thousand additional permits for the shipment of grain to the port of Reni. These quotas allow Moldovan grain producers and exporters to gain access to Ukrainian ports.

Although the Reni port pleases with its cargo handling rates, the problems with human resources at the enterprise have not been resolved. As a reminder, one of the port operators, the Reni Sea Commercial Port State Enterprise, owes its employees UAH 9.8 million (USD 366.6 thousand) in salaries.

Let us remind you that at the end of June, the executive service of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine recovered almost UAH 3 million (USD 112.2 thousand) from the State Enterprise “Reni Commercial Sea Port”, which the company owed its employees.

In December last year, 1 million 558 thousand 298 UAH (USD 58.2 thousand) of salary arrears in favor of 35 employees were also collected from the Reni port.
