Russia and Iraq signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of maritime transport

Russia and Iraq have signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of maritime transport.
The signing took place as part of the 10th meeting of the intergovernmental Russian-Iraqi commission on February 26 in Baghdad, Russian media reported.
“The successful completion of the negotiation process by agreement gives new impetus to the further development of bilateral maritime communications and updates the agreement of April 25, 1974 between the USSR and Iraq,” the Russian Ministry of Transport said in a statement.
The Russian government approved the draft agreement between Russia and Iraq on cooperation in the field of maritime transport submitted by the Ministry of Transport in May 2023. It was expected that the final document would be signed in October 2024.
According to the draft agreement, each party will grant vessels from the other country the same treatment as its own engaged in international traffic, with regard to free access to ports, use of infrastructure for loading and unloading cargo, and embarkation and disembarkation of passengers. This clause does not apply to ports closed to foreign vessels and does not apply to activities reserved by each party for its own organizations, including cabotage, towing, pilotage and salvage.
USM previously reported that Iran is forced to compete with Russia for unsanctioned tankers.
