The head of the port of Mariupol is suspected of embezzling UAH 11.6 million

After the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the head of the Mariupol port paid the contractors unspent funds.

The head of the Mariupol port was informed of suspicion of embezzlement of UAH 11.6 million, the Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office reports.

The official is suspected of embezzlement of other people’s property by abuse of official position, committed under martial law, in particularly large amounts (Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

In February 2022, a contract was signed between SE Mariupol Sea Trade Port and LLC for additional works on the construction of a specialized transshipment complex for grain cargoes.

“After the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, when the city was subjected to massive bombings, the acting director of the port decided to pay the contracted organization the funds that were not actually spent under the contract. Knowing for sure that construction at the enterprise will not be carried out in conditions of active hostilities, the official instructed the employees to prepare fictitious documents. At the same time, they were drawn up “backdated” — already after the expiration of the contract,” the message says.

In the period from October to December 2022, on the basis of acts signed by the head of the port, the contractor illegally received more than UAH 11.6 million from the state enterprise.

Currently, the issue of selecting a preventive measure for the suspect is being resolved.

It should be noted that the head of the port faces a sentence of 12 years in prison with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for 3 years and confiscation of property.
