Negotiations on sanctions against the Russian Federation are dragging on

The states of the European Union cannot agree on a new package of sanctions against Russia.

Today, May 10, another round of negotiations on the 11th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation began. Discussion between EU countries continues due to uncertainty about the extent of restrictions, Reuters. reports.

Yes, some countries in the bloc are disappointed that the Commission’s proposal did not include an end to the import of Russian diamonds or cooperation in nuclear energy. The Kremlin’s losses from the embargo under this proposal could amount to $550 million.

The new package of sanctions is being developed in coordination with the G7 countries. The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the new sanctions will focus on combating the circumvention of trade restrictions that are already in place. According to sources, the proposal includes blacklisting “dozens” of companies from China, Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

This could be the first time sanctions have been imposed against China because of its support for the Kremlin.

“If we see that goods are going from the EU to third countries and then end up in Russia, we can suggest that member states impose sanctions on the export of these goods. This tool will be a last resort and will be used with care,” commented Ursula von der Leyen.

In addition, the EU will stop the transit through Russia of most of its exports, including high-tech products and aircraft parts.
