UGA offers to transship Ukrainian grain on the raid of Romania

UGA proposes to increase the export of Ukrainian grain thanks to raid transshipment in the waters of Romania.

UGA President Mykola Gorbachev took part in a meeting within the framework of the Danube Cluster regarding the expansion of the transport possibilities of the Danube route, UGA reported.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Ukraine, Romania, Moldova and other EU countries, including transport ministers and heads of railway companies.

At the meeting, Mykola Gorbachev presented a proposal for the organization of an anchorage – raid transshipment in the territorial waters of Romania. The organization of this type of transshipment from barges with grain to large Panamax-type ships will significantly increase the throughput capacity of the Danube route for the export of Ukrainian grain.

According to preliminary estimates, the Danube ports of Ukraine can double the export of grain thanks to this decision.

Also, within the framework of the meeting, they previously discussed the possibility of diverting entry and exit from Ukrainian Danube ports – barges will enter for loading through the Ukrainian Bystre estuary, and will exit to the Black Sea through the Romanian Sulinsky Canal.

In addition, the possibility of using larger ships that could pass through the Sulina Channel was discussed at the meeting.

Advantages of using an anchorage in the waters of Romania:

• rapid increase in export volumes;

• no restrictions on the size of vessels and their draft;

• absence of mooring queues;

• formation of batches of grain for transshipment from several Danube ports at once.

At the same time, the Romanian side will increase its income from port fees and unload directly from its ports, since grain carriers will not need a berth.

Ukrainian ports on the Danube continue to set records and accept new challenges. Recently, the port of Reni received a bulk carrier with a record deadweight of 24,000 tons. For ports on the Danube, this is the first such vessel in the entire history of independent Ukraine.

And on June 21, a ship with a record deadweight and a record length — 24 thousand tons and 154 m, respectively — entered Izmail Portfor loading.

We will remind, in May, the ports of the Danube region processed more than 3 million tons of cargo. This is an absolute record for the ports of this region.
