A Panamanian-flagged bulker encountered a sea mine near the mouth of the Danube. There are no victims among the crew members.
At approximately 05:45 on December 27, the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier Vyssos encountered a Russian sea mine near the Bystre mouth of the Danube. This is reported by Fleetmon. The ship was headed to one of the Ukrainian ports to be loaded with grain.
The explosion was so strong that the ship’s stern was raised above the water, and the bulk carrier was depowered. The ship lost speed and control, a fire broke out on the upper deck. According to the crew members, the ship did not sink thanks to the quick and only correct reaction of the captain – he directed the badly damaged bulker to the nearest breakwater and ran it aground.
Boats of the Maritime Guard and Search and Rescue Service immediately assisted the crew and brought medics on board. Also, tugboats were sent to the vessel to remove it from the ground and bring it to the port. This was reported in the press service of the Defense Forces of Southern Ukraine.
During the inspection of the ship and interview of the captain, two sailors were found who were injured, their condition is satisfactory. The crew consists of 3 Ukrainians, 2 Turks and 13 Egyptians.
