Biden signed a law banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia
US President Joe Biden signed a law banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia.
A bipartisan law prohibits the import of enriched uranium from Russia for nuclear power plants, Ukrinform reports.
The US President’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said that this law should further limit the funding of the Kremlin regime.
“Today, President Biden signed into law a series of historic steps that will strengthen our nation’s energy and economic security by reducing — and ultimately eliminating — our dependence on Russia for civilian nuclear power,” Sullivan said.
According to him, the new law restores America’s leadership in the nuclear sector.
“This will help preserve our energy sector for future generations. And with the unprecedented $2.72 billion in federal funding that Congress recently appropriated at the president’s request, it will launch new enrichment facilities in the United States. And it will also send a clear message to the industry that we are committed to long-term growth of our nuclear sector,” said a representative of the US administration.
The new law prohibits the import of uranium from the Russian Federation 90 days after its signing. It would provide benefits until 2028 for utilities that would be forced to shut down nuclear reactors after Russia cut off supplies.
The document also provides for the allocation of $2.7 billion for the development of the uranium processing industry in the United States.
