Trump chose a financier who did not serve in the military as head of the US Navy

President-elect Donald Trump is set to nominate financier and donor John Phelan to head the U.S. Navy.

John Phelan has not served in the military and does not have extensive Navy experience, Politico reports.

“I am honored to announce John Phelan as our next Secretary of the United States Navy! John will be a tremendous force for our service members and a steadfast leader in advancing my vision of ‘America First,’” Trump wrote. “He will put the interests of the United States Navy above all else.”

Phelan, who heads private equity firm Rugger Management and once invested in Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, was a major donor to Trump’s campaign and reportedly hosted the president-elect at his home in Aspen, Colorado, this summer.

Trump chose Phelan, who has no military experience or long-term Navy experience, after a series of interviews at Mar-a-Lago on Monday, according to an anonymous source.

“John’s intelligence and leadership are unmatched,” Trump wrote. “His incredible knowledge and experience will improve the lives of the brave Americans who serve our nation. John will deliver real results for our Navy and our country.”

Trump previously selected Army National Guard veteran and former Fox News anchor Pete Hagseth to head the Department of Defense. The president is also considering businessman Steve Feinberg and investor Trey Stevens for Pentagon positions.
