Switzerland joins new EU sanctions against Russia

The Swiss sanctions mainly targeted Russian defense contractors and shipping companies.

From December 24, Switzerland joined the 15th package of EU sanctions, expanding the list of restrictions under its jurisdiction, the government website said.

“According to the latest lists, 54 individuals and 30 companies and organizations have been subject to sanctions that include asset freezes and a ban on the provision of funds, economic resources or technical services,” the government said.

It is known that these are mainly Russian defense contractors and shipping companies that transport Russian oil and oil products.

“In particular, 52 vessels were prohibited from providing complex services. These are mainly tankers that are part of the so-called Russian “shadow fleet” and circumvent the price restrictions on Russian oil and oil products, as well as vessels transporting military goods for Russia or stolen grain from Ukraine,” the report says.

Switzerland also adopted individual financial sanctions that the EU has imposed against Belarus. The measures concern 26 individuals and two organizations from Belarus.

As previously reported by USM, on December 16, the EU Council adopted the 15th package of economic and individual restrictive measures against Russia. The new sanctions are aimed, in particular, at circumventing sanctions by the Russian shadow fleet and weakening Russia’s military-industrial complex.
