Ukrainian vessels in the Southern Ocean caught a record amount of Antarctic biological resources in three years

Vessels under the flag of Ukraine have made a record catch of biological resources in the Southern Ocean over the past three years.

Last year, in the area of operation of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), Ukrainian vessels caught 19,980 tons of valuable Antarctic biological resources, Minister of Agricultural Policy Vitalii Koval reported.

This is 54% more than in 2023 (12,945 tons), and 107% more than in 2022 (9,659 tons).

The results of the catch in 2024 are 19,075 tons of Antarctic krill and 905 tons of Antarctic toothfish.

Five vessels under the state flag of Ukraine worked in the fishery: Simeiz, Koreiz, Calipso and Marigolds (toothfish campaign), as well as More Sodruzhestva (Antarctic krill fishing).

Fishery entities paid over UAH 7.2 million to local budgets for the special use of aquatic biological resources. This is UAH 1.1 million more than in 2023.

Reference. CCAMLR is an intergovernmental organization that ensures the conservation of Antarctic marine living resources and control over fishing activities. Ukraine has been its member since 1994.

In the CCAMLR zone, fishing is carried out according to the Olympic principle – the catch is allowed until the total limit is exhausted.

Earlier, USM reported that for the first time in Ukraine, a state fishing vessel will be leased through Prozorro.
