Russian submarine cables break in the Baltic Sea

A broken Russian submarine cable is being repaired in the Gulf of Finland. In total, two Russian cables are damaged in the sea.

Finland learned about the cable malfunction back in December, Yle reports.

According to the Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs, there are two damaged cables, of which the cable called “Baltika” is currently being repaired. The Finnish Coast Guard is monitoring the repair work in the Gulf of Finland.

The Gulf of Finland Coast Guard reported that the Russian cable broke in the Finnish exclusive economic zone. The authorities have known about the cable repair for some time.

The “Baltika” cable belongs to the Russian state company Rostelecom. The cable repair work will last about a week, depending on weather conditions.

The “Baltika” crosses the cables between Finland and Estonia. In addition, the C-lion1 cable, which was damaged on Christmas, runs next to it. The length of the Baltika cable is about 1,000 kilometers. Approximately 377 kilometers of the cable lie in the Finnish zone.

Earlier, USM reported that the Helsinki District Court ruled to arrest the tanker Eagle S, which damaged submarine cables in the Gulf of Finland.

Recall, on December 28, the police and the Finnish Coast Guard detained the tanker Eagle S. The investigation believes that on December 25, the tanker damaged the Estlink 2 power cable connecting Finland and Estonia, and also caused damage to four fiber-optic lines, stretching the anchor along the seabed for tens of kilometers.

During a search of the vessel, law enforcement officers found spy equipment that was used to monitor maritime activity in the region.

At the same time, 32 technical deficiencies were found on the tanker Eagle S during port control. Three of them are so serious that the ship cannot leave Finnish waters without immediate repairs.

Meanwhile, a number of officials in the US and Europe believe that the damage to the cables in the Baltic Sea are accidents, not sabotage.
