Blocking fertilizer imports to ports may cause food prices to rise in Ukraine, — All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council

Restrictions on the import of fertilizers into the ports of Ukraine can harm not only farmers, but also the economy as a whole.
This was stated by the Deputy Chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council Denys Marchuk on the air of the Suspilne TV channel.
According to him, complex fertilizers, unlike certain brands of ammonium nitrate, are completely explosion-proof and do not support combustion. Therefore, any restrictions on their import into Ukrainian ports are unjustified from a safety point of view, but at the same time harm agriculture and the economy of Ukraine as a whole.
“Complex fertilizers must be allowed into the ports of Great Odesa. We cannot provide ourselves with production, so imports are vital. The blockade will lead to an increase in fertilizer prices,” Denys Marchuk emphasized.
In particular, as of today, farmers do not have the opportunity to apply fertilizers in preparation for sowing winter crops. The prospect of crop losses is 30–50%.
“Everyone will feel these consequences – from sole proprietors to large agricultural companies. We will export less, and therefore there will be less foreign exchange earnings. Due to the idleness of ships and artificial restrictions, the final cost of not only fertilizers, but also farmers’ products, the new harvest – both winter and spring crops, and vegetables will increase. Without fertilizers, there will be neither the intended yield nor the quality of products, and this will lead to an increase in the price of food on store shelves,” explained the deputy head of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council. As previously reported by USM, AMEU appealed to the authorities regarding the order banning fertilizers in Ukrainian ports.
