Iran summons Ukrainian diplomat over attack on ship in Caspian Sea

Iran has accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea. According to Tehran, the explosion killed one sailor and injured another.

Al Jazeera reported this with reference to the Iranian state news agency IRNA.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s charge d’affaires in Tehran over the incident, which it called a “hostile and criminal” attack.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said that the attack was recognized by the Ukrainian leadership and called it a manifestation of Kyiv’s “irrational and hostile approach” to Tehran. The ministry also warned that Iran would defend its national interests.

Tehran considers the incident a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and says that it could lead to “further escalation and expansion of the Russo-Ukrainian war.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also discussed the situation by phone with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaia Kallas.

According to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Araghchi condemned the military attack on the ship in the Caspian Sea and called for a “decisive response” from the UN Security Council, the European Union and the international community.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously reported on the X social network that Ukraine had achieved “very strong results” thanks to long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea. According to him, ships used for military cargo transportation with the participation of Iran, as well as a warship, were hit.

At the same time, Zelenskyy did not name the commercial vessel that Tehran claimed as a separate target.

Earlier, USM reported that the SBU hit two Russian ships and a missile boat in the Caspian Sea.
