Sulina closed again due to bad weather: over 80 vessels are waiting at the roadstead

The Sulina Canal has been closed again since October 18 due to adverse weather conditions, while about 82 vessels have accumulated in the roadstead.

This was reported by Avalon Shipping Operations Manager Kateryna Kononenko.

As of October 19, about 82 vessels are in the Sulina roadstead. About 30 more vessels are ready to leave at mile 44.

According to Kononenko, the canal has been closed again since October 18 due to bad weather.

She noted that navigation in the Sulina is allowed only during daylight hours, so the time available for vessels to pass is already limited. Additional closures due to weather conditions further reduce the operational capacity of the canal.

The Sulina Canal has been closed due to adverse weather conditions for a total of more than nine days over the past month, which significantly reduces its actual throughput capacity.

The maximum safe draft is currently:

• Sulina — 7.01 m;

• Bystre — 5.5 m;

• Izmail — 44th mile — 6.6–6.8 m;

• Reni — 44th mile — 6.7 m;

• Galati — 6.4 m;

• Giurgiuleşti — 4 m near the berth.
