New railways can give Ukraine access to the Baltic ports
The Polish government is considering the possibility of creating a railway that will connect the Ukrainian and Lithuanian railway networks, as well as connect the ports of Gdańsk and Klaipeda to them.
The 1520 mm standard railway will be able to run through the territory of Poland. Currently, 500 km of new road is needed, which is economically beneficial for Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania. Such a project was proposed by the Ukrainian Agrarian Council, reports TTS.
“The realities of the war showed two things in the global market of agricultural products. The first is the high dependence of Ukrainian exports on russia. As long as russian federation controls the Black Sea, we are always under the risk that Ukraine will not be able to supply the world with food at a normal pace. Second, the world is extremely dependent on the export of agricultural crops from Ukraine. There will be famine in Asia and Africa without Ukrainian grain,” said Dmytro Kokhan, adviser to the Ukrainian Agrarian Council on issues of interaction with state authorities.
Currently, the European infrastructure cannot accept large volumes of cargo. Ukraine’s exit to the Baltic ports, in particular the powerful port of Klaipeda, will be an extremely important strategic decision. The port of Gdańsk can also be connected to the new broad-gauge railway. According to preliminary estimates, it is necessary to lay about 500 km of broad gauge on the territory of Poland. The project will cost 3-5 billion dollars. If approved, it could be implemented in just a few years.
We would like to remind, earlier the Ukrainian Agrarian Council already voiced the idea of building new logistics routes on the territory of Poland to the representatives of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.
