Tanker with Russian LNG from sanctioned plant idles near Spain

The tanker Cool Rover was loaded at Gazprom’s Portovaya LNG export facility, which the US imposed sanctions on Friday.

The vessel will be the first to test buyers’ willingness to bypass the latest round of sanctions, Bloomberg reported.

The tanker Cool Rover (IMO:9333618) was loaded at Gazprom’s Portovaya LNG export facility in late December. The vessel is currently idle off the coast of Spain and Portugal, according to ship tracking data.

Last week, the Portovaya LNG facility was added to the list of the most aggressive US sanctions.

According to ship data, Portovaya and the Novatek-led Vysotsky LNG facility exported about 2.3 million tons of gas last year. That’s about 0.6% of total global exports in 2024.

As previously reported by USM, by the end of 2024, the European Union imported 15.5 million tons of Russian LNG, which is the highest figure since 2019.
