The IMO will not recognize ship documents issued in the occupied territories of Ukraine
According to Ukraine’s proposal, IMO members will not recognize documents for ships issued by Russians in temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories.
IMO member states supported Ukraine’s proposal to not recognize documents issued by Russians in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, the press service of the Shipping Administration reported. These are ship registration documents, certification surveys and other mandatory ship documents.
The IMO also called for measures to be taken to remove illegally issued documents during the inspection of ships flying the flag of the Russian Federation or other states, the crews of which include Russian sailors. Such vessels will be detained in ports until the inappropriate crew members are replaced.
The relevant decision was taken at the 107th session of the Committee on Safety at Sea.
At the request of the Ukrainian side, flag and port states should apply a similar approach to fishing vessel personnel.
