The MTWTUU defended the right to compensation for the family of the deceased Ukrainian sailor

The accident occurred on board a ship that was in the port of Spain. After the sailor died, his family sought help.

This was reported by the Maritime Transport Workers Trade Union of of Ukraine (MTWTUU).

The ITF inspector in Ukraine provided the family with the necessary explanations regarding the company’s obligations under the TMU collective agreement and the subsequent procedure.

“After some time, it became clear that certain processes were being delayed. Then the Trade Union began communicating with representatives of the shipowner to find out the reasons for the delay and monitor the fulfillment of obligations to the family. Some of the obligations were fulfilled, but the issue of compensation remained unresolved for a long time,” the TMU said.

In particular, the trade union maintained contact with representatives of the shipowner, requested the necessary explanations, monitored the progress of the process, and provided the family with up-to-date information.

The specialists of the MTWTUU were also in communication with the insurance club and helped to ensure that all necessary documents and issues that prevented the completion of the procedure were properly processed.

“After completing the documentary procedures and receiving the necessary clarifications, the process was finalized. Despite the delay, the stipulated obligations to the family of the deceased seafarer were fulfilled, and the issue of compensation was closed,” the PRMTU emphasized.

The PRMTU reminded that members of the trade union and their families can contact the Trade Union free of charge for consultations and assistance on labor and social issues. Within its competence, the PRMTU can provide support to an ITF inspector, provide clarification on the rights and obligations of the parties under an individual contract and the relevant collective agreement, help assess the situation, communicate and negotiate with the employer.
