Trump may impose sanctions against Russia if Putin refuses to negotiate, says Lindsey Graham

US President Donald Trump may impose sanctions on Russia if its President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham wrote about this on the social network X.

He claims that US President Donald Trump may impose new sanctions on Russia if Putin refuses to sit down at the negotiating table.

“It is time to end the war between Russia and Ukraine fairly and with honor, as President Trump is trying to do,” Graham wrote.

The senator noted that Putin “has publicly spoken defiantly and resisted President Trump’s statements.”

“If Putin refuses to seriously sit down at the peace table, I hope and expect that President Trump will unleash additional economic sanctions against Russia’s banking and energy sectors and, if necessary, impose large tariffs. The impact on Russia’s already weak economy will force them to sit down at the table,” he claims.

Graham also wrote that “pushing the Ukrainians to peace and trying to make a major deal with them on minerals” makes sense.

“Talking to Russia about how to end the conflict makes perfect sense to me. In the last 48 hours, Ukraine has made serious announcements about a ceasefire, a minerals deal, and its willingness to engage in peace talks,” the senator said.

Earlier, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant also said that the United States would “not hesitate” to impose sanctions on Russia’s energy sector if it helped bring about a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Earlier, USM reported that US oil exports to India reached a two-year high due to sanctions against Russia.
