Ukraine agrees with Hungary on transit of agricultural products

Budapest previously agreed to let the cargo pass on the condition that it does not enter the Hungarian market.
The Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine has appealed to the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture regarding the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products. This was reported by the Minister of Agrarian Policy Taras Vysotskyi in response to a question from “Social”.
“After this discussion, we will be able to announce the next steps, what the results will be. Today we are waiting for a relevant focused bilateral dialogue, a call on this matter,” Vysotskyi said.
The basis for the negotiations appeared at the EU summit on October 16. Volodymyr Zelenskyi appealed to Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary with a request to allow the transit of Ukrainian grain through their territories – as it worked at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. During a personal meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar, the president emphasized that transporting corn to Western Europe by rail in sealed wagons would significantly help.
“I said that if it is only transit through the territory of the country, then, of course, there are no obstacles to this,” said Magyar in an interview with RTL.
Recall that in May 2026, the Hungarian government renewed the ban on food imports from Ukraine, so Budapest insists on guarantees that the cargo will not enter the domestic market. The reaction of other neighbors is so far more restrained. In early October, Poland and Romania refused to expand the transit of Ukrainian grain through their territories.
The need for land routes has increased due to the de facto blockade of sea exports. After July 22, cargo processing at the ports of Great Odesa decreased by more than 15 times, and the Black Sea corridor, through which about 90% of Ukrainian agricultural exports went, is actually not working.
As USM wrote the day before, due to problems with sea exports, the wait at the border with Poland has increased to 7-9 days.
