UN: destruction of Kakhovska HPP will affect global food security
The destruction of the Kakhovska HPP dam will affect global food security, cause food prices to rise and water supply problems for hundreds of thousands of people.
This was stated by UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths, Reuters reports.
“This granary – this entire territory that descends to the Black Sea and Crimea – is a granary not only for Ukraine, but also for the world. We already have difficulties with food security, but food prices, I am sure, will definitely increase. It is almost inevitable that we will see huge problems with the harvesting and planting of the next crop. And so what we’re going to see is a huge impact on global food security,” said Martin Griffiths.
The official also noted that the damage caused to civil infrastructure on such a scale is completely contrary to international humanitarian law.
“It is obvious. Whoever did this violated the Geneva Conventions,” said Martin Griffiths.
We will remind you that on the night of June 6, the Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovska HPP. The disaster has already caused tragic consequences in the form of water pollution, a sea of fish and the flooding of the Kherson Region. In the occupied territory of the region, people are not evacuated, because of which several deaths are already known.
