Romania approved the transit of Swedish boats for Ukraine

President of Romania Klaus Iohannis informed the parliament about the decision to approve the transit of Swedish boats to Ukraine.

The country will let the amphibious assault boats transferred to Ukraine by Sweden pass through its territory, Agerpres reports.

In August, Sweden announced the transfer of landing craft to Ukraine and asked Romania to support this process. Swedish personnel consisting of 35 people have already arrived in Romania and are using Mihail Kogelnicanu air base and Mangalia port for accommodation.

In addition, Sweden has requested the provision of logistical support for Ukrainian servicemen who will undergo training on these boats. It is about transport, food, accommodation and other needs necessary for the effective conduct of educational activities.

President Iohannis emphasized that Romania’s participation in these exercises is an important signal of support for Ukraine and demonstrates the country’s readiness to contribute to collective defense. Transit and training costs will be covered from the budget of the Ministry of National Defense of Romania, with possible further reimbursement under EU mechanisms.

The Parliament of Romania also approved the request of President Klaus Iohannis to create a maritime training center for the training of the Ukrainian military.

As a reminder, Sweden will hand over six Combat Boat 90 combat boats to Ukraine. The boats for the Armed Forces Navy will be handed over as part of the 17th package of sanctions in the amount of SEK 4.6 billion ($440 million).
