The first sentences for importers of Ukrainian grain in Poland: the fines turned out to be “symbolic”

Polish courts have started issuing the first sentences in the case of importers of Ukrainian grain, who are accused of illegal schemes.

In particular, it is about concealing the origin of grain, Latifundist reports.

For a year and a half, the regional prosecutor’s office in Rzeszów has been investigating cases of abuse related to the import of grain from Ukraine, which was declared for technical purposes, but was actually used for food needs. The case involves 19 people who are suspected of violating Polish legislation.

Prosecutor Dorota Sokolovska-Mach reported that the investigation covers 70 different episodes regarding the import of products from Ukraine, including wheat, rape and corn. Currently, the four suspects are banned from leaving the country, they are under police supervision and have to pay property bonds.

The trial of four people has already been completed, two of them have been sentenced. However, the amounts of fines imposed — 4 and 6 thousand zlotys (approximately 42 and 63 thousand hryvnias, respectively) — caused outrage. Local farmers who have suffered due to competition with Ukrainian grain consider these punishments too mild and “symbolic” given the scale of the violations.
