The port of Constanta has halved the transshipment of transit Ukrainian grain

The Ukrainian share in the grain segment of the port of Constanta decreased from 40% to 24%.

According to the results of the three quarters of 2024, the Romanian port of Constanta more than halved the transshipment of Ukrainian grain cargoes compared to the same period last year. During this period, 5.17 million tons were shipped against 10.4 million tons last year, the Mind writes.

Ukrainian grain traffic through the Romanian port decreased especially noticeably in the third quarter. Thus, only 930,000 tons of grain were shipped in the third quarter, compared to 2.08 million tons in the second quarter and 2.16 million tons in the first.

August was the most critical month of the third quarter, when only 120,000 tons of Ukrainian grain passed through Constanta.

In September, traffic recovered somewhat — 430,000 tons were shipped. Whereas in July, August and September 2023, the transit of Ukrainian grain through the Romanian port amounted to 600,000 tons, 1.1 million tons, and 1.3 million tons, respectively.

The publication noted that this year’s loss of half of Ukrainian transit affected the volume of grain cargo flow in Constanta. For example, grain shipments decreased by 12.9% over the same period last year to 21.9 million tons.

It will be recalled that in 2023 the cargo turnover of the port of Constanta, which is the key port of Romania on the Black Sea, amounted to a record 92.5 million tons. Significant growth was ensured thanks to Ukrainian cargo flows.
