Russia has deployed cruise missile carriers in the Mediterranean Sea: what is known
The Russians have deployed four ships to the Mediterranean Sea. There have also been initial signs that the Russian Federation is evacuating its military fleet from a base in Syria.
On Tuesday, December 3, the Russians deployed four ships to the Mediterranean Sea, which can simultaneously launch 44 Kalibr missiles, the Ukrainian Navy reported.
The Russian activity in the Mediterranean Sea is likely related to the latest events in Syria. According to the ГУР, the situation for the Russians in Syria is deteriorating, and Russian troops and diplomats are beginning to leave the country’s capital, Damascus.
The Naval News publication writes that there are initial signs that the Russian Federation is evacuating its military fleet from the Syrian port of Tartus after a rapid offensive by the rebels.
On Monday, December 2, the Russian auxiliary ship Elnya left Tartus. It was also reported that two frigates, another unnamed auxiliary ship, and a submarine had departed.
It is worth noting that in the summer of 2024, when the Russian Federation also deployed ships to the Mediterranean Sea, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk, stated that the Russians could use such weapons to continue the genocide of the Syrians.
He recalled that the Russians have a permanent operational group of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea. The Russians are based there in Tartus (Syria).
At the same time, the probability of shelling of Ukraine from Russian ships in the Mediterranean Sea is much lower. In a comment to the publication “Social”, military observer of the group “Information Resistance” Oleksandr Kovalenko said that depending on the modification, sea-based missiles “Caliber” can reach Ukrainian territories from the Mediterranean Sea.
“However, for this, the missiles must fly through the airspace of a NATO country, which can shoot them down or move in neutral space, but this will require very painstaking calculation of the flight trajectory,” the expert emphasized.
