NATO convenes summit to strengthen maritime security
NATO member states will discuss strengthening maritime security in the Finnish capital amid damage to critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
A NATO summit on maritime security will be held in Helsinki on January 14. The main focus will be on countering the Russian “shadow fleet” and protecting underwater infrastructure, writes Gospodarka Morska writes.
The summit will bring together key leaders of the region: Poland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and Finland. Representatives of NATO and the European Commission will also be present at the meeting.
One of the main topics will be increasing the activity of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), which plays an important role in ensuring stability in the region.
In addition, the possibility of Poland and Germany joining the JEF will be discussed, which will expand the functionality of the force and strengthen inspections of vessels suspected of having ties to the Russian fleet.
